okay, here's the deal:
i have a XP Pro and a 98 SE. i bought a crossover cable
recently because i was sick of other limited ways of
connecting the 2 and only 2 computers. what i want is to
have XP connect to the internet throught a usb cable
modem. the internet is fine, but i can't share files or
the internet. the lights are blinking and the stats say
packets are sent and recieved but niether computer can be
pinged. the XP computer shows the other computer in
network computers, but it says the network path was not
found when i try to access it. the 98 computer shows not
recognition of the XP. the subsequent mask is the same.
what should i do?

You need to enable ICS on the XP PC to allow the W9x PC to share
the XP PC's cable modem.

Also, ICF can cause grief on the XP PC: it must be disabled on
the connection to the W9x PC in order to share files.
