Hello everyone,

I own a Asus P5AD2-E Premium motherboard of which I enabled the onboard
C-Media audio. It was giving me alot of problems, and I had to download and
install various drivers.

It got so bad that I bought a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Value, but before I
could get the Audigy working 100%, I had to format my PC a few times.

Now that the Audigy is working fine, I try to activate my copy of XP Pro
SP1, but I get the error "According to our records, the number of times you
activate Windows with this product key has been exceeded". I must now get a
new product key.

What must I do now? There is no change that I will be buying another copy of
XP Pro. It is not my fault that the onboard audio on the Asus MB is so crappy
that I had to format my PC several times.

Please help! :-)

Use the option to activate by phone.

MS has had many opportunities to change that totally misleading message,
but they haven't. One can only assume MS is trying to mislead people
into buying a copy of software that they don't really need.

It is a deceptive practice, but as you have been already told, do phone
activation.

No, you don't need a new Product Key. Where'd you ever get such an idea?

What must I do now?

Simply choose the option to activate via telephone, and explain the
situation.

There is no change that I will be buying another copy of
XP Pro.

Nor is there any need.

Well, formatting a hard drive and reinstalling an OS several times just
to fix a simple device driver issue is a bit extreme, you must admit....
And it was *your* decision to use that specific motherboard and sound
card with WinXP, after all....

Or could it be that Microsoft is crediting their customers with more
intelligence than some of them exhibit? That message never made me
think I needed to buy another license.

Well, according to the web page the Activation linked to, I have to buy
another product key. There is even a link to the MS Shop

I disabled the on board sound, un-installed the driver (which appears every
time after a reboot), and I still had the same problems. Asus Technical
Support said they can help me no further, and that I must get a sound card.
Creative said the problem lies not with the Audigy. So, what am I to do if
nobody wants to help?
And it was *your* decision to use that specific motherboard and sound
card with WinXP, after all....

Yes, it was *my* decision to get the Asus board, and to enable the on board
sound since it was suppose to have such good sound capabilities.

Luckily, I was able to activate my copy of XP again. :-)

Best regards,

But it has confused many that have done absolutely nothing wrong. And
you've known about this deceptive message since XP was in Beta.

People get confused reading traffic regulation or the directions on the
back of the cake mix box, too. That doesn't mean that there was ever
any malicious intent on the part of those providing the information.

The message, while admittedly poorly crafted, is "deceptive" only to
those too gullible or too lazy to double check on the meaning.

After over 4 years of knowing people have been confused by the language,
AND DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT, I'd say that the deception is
purposeful.

You don't, but you've know all along what the message means. Not
everybody is a Microsoft groupie like you are.

You mean that you're not responsible for making your own decisions?
Does you mommy decide everything for you? If an individual makes a
decision without bothering to do any research of the matter first, or
without bothering to learn even the basics, then he's in no position to
complain about anything but his own lack of planning.
