XP Performance Problem

My computer is acting like it has Spyware installed but it doesn't.

I've scanned with various anti-spyware packeages, including:
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Microsoft AntiSpyware
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spyware Doctor
Norton Systemworks 2006
I made sure to get the latest definitions for all these and my computer
checks out fine.

Certain operations take much longer than they should, for example:
DoubleClick on a Text file (or any other file)
* Takes at least 5-15 seconds to open

I've disabled services and startup items. I found that if I disable
the 'DHCP Client' service that the delay goes away.

So, some program appears to be hitting the network when I doubleclick
on any type of file.

Sounds like Spyware to me; but none of the programs can find it.

I have XP Professional Version 2002 SP 2. It's a dual processor with
2GB.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

try trend micro housecall. if you have real player see if if you have got a
weatherbug.....ADW_MINIBUG.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the problem occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Uninstall norton. It is worse than than a virus for slowing systems
down. Try avg or avast, both are free and work better than norton.

Thanks for all the ideas.

I pursued them all and stil have the problem.

My machine just slows to a crawl when double-clicking a document file
(txt/notepad) of do a File->Copy on files from filemanger

I've scanned with most anit-Spyware's and the machine shows as clean.

If I disable DHCP Client then things return to normal.

How can I tell what process is hitting the network?

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
image name producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.
