Will Microsoft fix the degration in performance problem with a ongoing XP
installation?

I have found since re-installing my OS and putting back my apps and games
that my system is incredibly faster.. So fast that playing a game like
BattleField: Vietnam that I load maps even faster than my buddy who has a
2.6GHz cpu which is 600MHz faster than mine.. I've noticed overall my
application load time is significantly faster as well. I remember that MS
had a patch for another OS or Win98 or something that fixed this, well I
believe the problem is also still in XP as well. Only explanation because if
I were to compare what I had previously to what I have now it's got to be
pretty darn close. I hope too that MS will one day add a routine in their OS
that will do self maintenance on their registry and clean out non-existant
applications from hklm/software and hkcu/software..

Cheers

SP 2 is beta software and if you use it, it is done at your own risk! There
is no support for it yet, until it is release to the general public later
this year.

Huh? who said anything about SP2? Lots of brave people out there for that I
see. I'm very interested in SP2 but I am talking Native Windows here...,
thanks anyhow.
I'll install SP2 when it's officially released.

Actually, Tom, I read your subject line as meaning that you had
installed SP2 and had trouble with it, too. It wasn't until your second
post that I realized what you meant. Degraded performance comes about
from many things: the user not performing regular maintenance, physical
and on the operating system level, the user installing unnecessary
programs, the user not minimizing the number of programs and services
running in the background, the user not keeping the computer clean of
viruses and/or spyware, the user installing more physical devices than
his power supply can really handle. Sometimes Windows Update patches
can be a factor, too, but mostly system slowness comes about from those
other factors I mentioned. As you noticed, a system that is clean will
perform better and faster than a system that has a lot of cruft in it
but has a faster processor.

Yes, I'm asking if this problem is fixed in SP2... and I don't see your
point? I'm stating XP 'period' has the continual degradation problem they
fixed a long time ago.. My system doesn't change much, my OS ages in it's
current state aside from updates from Microsoft and the longer my system
goes, the more sluggish it apparently becomes. This is only noticeable after
reinstalling the OS and putting all my applications back..right now my
system is fast as fast can be, but 2 months down the road it will like
resume being slow again..when I can play a game and load games faster and
maps faster than a machine running @ 2.6Ghz, to me there's an issue
obviously overlooked.

Try it for yourself, do some time tracking on application lauch.. later do
the tests again a few months down the road..do time testing again and then
fresh install XP and put back all your applications, you will see a huge
difference in performance..this performance is lost over time.. and we are
not talking a mere 2-3seconds, I am talking in excess of 10-20 seconds
differences. Windows becomes sluggish after several months and that's with
regular maintenance such as defrag, desktop cleanup etc..

Thats people making assumptions..

What does XP Performance degradation fix in SP2, mean??

Answer. Does SP2 fix the performance degradation in Windows XP.
then I further elaborated on why I asked the question..

Anyhow.. no big deal, I answered your question already above..I am a
experienced user that does support for many people for all versions of
Windows. This is a observation that I noticed after re-installing my OS
recently... I run always the same applications..I don't install and
uninstall applications.. at best, I install and uninstall Games, not
applications.. I also do scheduled maintenance between 2 - 4 weeks which
includes defragging. I also run my swap file on my secondary drive
controlled by Windows..

I don't do anything really special with my system.. it's merely for MS
Office XP and gaming.

No it didn't. He asked if the problem will be fixed in SP". I saw no mention
of having it installed. I think you read something that wasn't there. To
answer the question for you Tom; don't hold your breath. I doubt there will
be a fix for it. Keep using 3rd party software. I do this, and XP runs
sweet, even after long periods and instlling/uninstalling lots of software.
Personally, I recommend Norton System Works. The One Button check up works
really well.

thanks.. least there is hope someone can read and understand english
here...hehehe. Ya I do manual removal of software after installation
followed by reboot and use application to check such as 'System Mechanic',
'Registry Mechanic' etc.. as well I frequent the www.tweakxp.com site for
any other interesting tweaks...Despite all this.. I'm willing to bet in a
month or two, my friend and his +600MHz on my cpu will be beating me loading
maps again... I'll just wait I guess like last time until Microsoft has some
room in its schedule to patch this problem up. I was thinking too perhaps my
swap file was fragmented or something so i'd delete it and recreate it on C
and then recreate it later on D...

Oh well, was worth a shot, thanks for your input Lindsay.. was the problem I
was thinking of on windows 98?? or was it 2000? I can't recall but I knew it
was there for a long time.. I think it even involved system crashes..hehe.

Cheers
