I am having the most frustrating problem. If i start a
program like internet explorer, I get an hour glass for 30-
60 seconds before the program opens. Then it works fine,
until I want to open another window, then I get the pause
again.

Not only when opening programs. I have a small txt file
on my desktop, and if i right click on it, the entire
system hangs for 30-60 seconds before the property menu is
displayed.

The funny thing is, I only have this problem if connected
to the lan or dialed up to the internet.

I have enabled a diagnostic startup using Msconfig,
checked for spyware, viruses etc. but no luck.

Please help!

Dennis

Dennis,

Click Start | Run | and type "Regsvr32 /i shell32.dll"
then,
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shellextension.dll

Restart Windows.

If this does not help, tweak the services.

The following services are optional for normal Windows XP functionality. So,
these services can be safely disabled:

Alerter
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
ClipBook
Human Interface Device Access
Indexing Service
Messenger
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Portable Media Serial Number
Secondary Logon
Smart Card
Smart Card Helper
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Wireless Zero Configuration
Background Intelligent Transfer Service

Procedure to disable a Service:

1. Click Start | Run | and type "Services.msc"
2. Right-click the service that you want to configure, and then click
Properties.
3. On the General tab, in the Startup type box, click Disabled.
4. Click OK and close the "Services" window.

Use the above procedure to disable all the services mentioned above. After
disabling the services, you will need to restart the computer for the
changes to take effect.

.
Have you checked to see if dllhost.exe is running in task
manager? If it is you probably have a virus. I Got rid
of it by putting the clock forward to 2004 as the virus
deletes itself after this date. Give it a try.
