I TURNED ON MY PC AND SOMEHOW IT STARTED BACK UP ASKING
FOR THE PRE INSTALLED USER PASSWORD, AS THE PC IS SECOND
HAND OBVIOUSLY YHE PASSWORD IS LOST. IS THERE SOME WAY I
CAN RECOVER THE INFORMATION OR WILL I HAVE TO RE FORMAT
THE HARD DRIVE AND BUY ANOTHER OS TO INSTALL, CAN ANYONE
HELP PLEASE.

Andy,

There is a way of getting the password back. You will have
to use the computer you are on right now to look into
further detail, but as far as I know all you need is the
recovery dieskette (if you made one) and boot up with it.
This will reset the Windows XP password and you will be
good to go. If you did not create one of these, then yeah
you'll have to reformat and install again. But there is no
reason to buy a new OS, just use the same CD that you used
to install it the first time. The Product Activation will
not mind if you install again on the same hardware, it only
stops you from doing on different computers. If something
goes wrong, e-mail me or post up here and I'll see what I
can do to help.

Hope it works out for ya,

G'Day Andy,

1. PLEASE DON'T SHOUT!!!!!!!!!!

2. Is the password required
(a) almost mmediately after power on?
OR
(b) after windows has started?

If (a) then:

a BIOS password is required and
that has nothing to do with Windows - consult
a technician familiar with your hardware.

If (b) then:

You do have ONE thing that MAY work.

Try to log in as 'Administrator', leaving the
password blank.

Xp Prof - If you see the Welcome Sceen,
press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice then
try to login.

Xp Home - you need to boot to Safe Mode
to log in as Administrator.

If it works, set up your users and passwords
to suit.

AT FIRST, rename the 'existing user' to a
name of your choosing and change the
password - DON'T FORGET it.

Then reboot and go from there!

DO CREATE A PASSWORD RESET DISK!!

In EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES, you
may care to visit
http://www.datapol.de/en
and investigate CIA Commander
OR
visit
http://www.winternals.com/products/repairandrecovery/erdcommander2002.asp
and consider ERD Commander
- (you'll need a diskette and a friend's PC).
