Can anyone recommend an effective partitioning program for XP that is
less expensive than Partition Magic from Symantec?

Partition Commander from www.v-com.com (I believe is 29.95)
or
Acronis Disk Director from www.acronis.com (you can get the package deal for
49.95 - Disk Director and TrueImage Backup). Very good products.

I hear some people use BootIT ... it's freeware for 30 days and then you
must buy it.

Hi,

BootIT NG from terabyteunlimited.com is my choice, and it's about half the
cost. It can also be used as a bootloader and includes imaging software for
reliable backups.

If you want a 3rd party boot manager as well, try system commander. It
comes with partition commander as part of the package. See v-com.com.
Have been using a few versions of system commander since 1999. Didn't buy
the last version as I don't need it for XP.

Gparted

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

Don't let the reference to Linux scare you. After asking a few questions
about your keyboard and nationalty (so it can set up localized keytables
and fonts) it'll boot directly into the GUI and run gparted. In use it's a
lot like Partition Magic, only better (and free). The bootable ISO is
about a 30-megabyte download.
