XP OS freezes

About every minute or so XP freezes 100%. Trying to see a
spike in task manager doesn't work as it appears that no
task is utilizing the CPU just before or after the
freeze. This sometimes goes away for a period of
hours/days/weeks and then comes back. So far I froze
three times typing this.
 
No virus. Spyware- possibly - know where I can downlaod
good spyware detection/removal software?

Two popular spyware detection and removal programs are AdAware and Spybot
Search and Destroy. You can find them on the Internet.
