If I use a third-party util to partition (PM or BING), existing data will not
be destroyed, correct?

If I use the XP util it will essentially wipe the slate clean, correct?

Technically the answer is "Who Knows"?

You could use something like Partition Magic to "resize" your current
partitions (which is what I am assuming you mean) and the chances are
"slightly" on your side that nothing will be lost. The chances still exists
that your entire system will become unusable and restoration will be a
matter of having backups or really knowing what you are doing.

If you use Windows XP to partition, well - you are not resizing, you are
redoing. Windows XP has no built in (for normal partitions) "resize"
functionality. It has "delete" and "create" essentially.

I've been using PM for years, and have had generally very good luck with it,
with very few exceptions. The vast majority of the time it performs its
duties admirably. One piece of advice, if you're going to be creating new
partitions on a drive which already stores files: make sure to defrag the
drive first in order to consolidate all the data, then partition away. Oh,
and (as always) make sure you have a backup.

The only place I know of that XP has a built-in partitioning utility is in
setup; if you partition from there you're well on your way to reinstalling
XP in one fashion or another. That method is not recommended if you want to
conserve your data.

Well, I only have one large 220G partition, of which I would like to create a
smaller 50G section, keeping one operating system; mainly to create a
secondary drive letter for personal usage.

Maybe that clarifies what I am doing... ?

Partition Magic is what you want to use - not XP

All data can be lost in a second when playing with partitioning
applications.

Basically that's correct, but there are no guarantees. Because
it's always possible for something to go wrong, it isn't prudent
to do this without first making sure you have a backup of
anything you can't afford to lose.

Yes.

Not normally; but there is always some element of risk, eg power failure
at a critical moment. These things are resilient, but nevertheless back
up data first

Yes, unless you have unallocated space on the disk that has never been
used - not likely
