can i put my XP disk i purchased on more than one of my computers? or can it
only be registered to one?

Simple answer is No. You can only use the copy of XP on the first computer
you installed it on. If you want to install on other PCs then you need to by
either extra copies of XP or (if it is more than 5 copies) a volume licence.

Technically it may be possible but the license is only for one computer
unless you purchased a volume license. Read the EULA; Start, Run, type
in EULA.TXT and hit Enter.

They won't even let you install two instances of XP on the same
machine but on different HDD's using a drive caddy setup.

I bet you could with a cracked version of XP ...

That's not necessarily true. Many have reported here that MS reps have
said that dual booting two installations of XP is permissible since only
one instance can be running at a time. MS even has KB article on how to
do a "parallel" installation of XP on a single PC.

You need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer on
which you install it. (As long as you have two identical licenses, it
doesn't matter if you use the same CD for the installations.)

Just as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.

One can buy additional licenses, assuming one already has a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

A Windows XP license can only be used once on
one computer. A second installation requires a second
license.

From the Windows XP EULA:

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Software on a single
computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other
device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not
be used by more than two (2) processors at any one
time on any single Workstation Computer.

Please read your End-User License Agreement by going
to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter. Then
click on "End-User License Agreement".

If you already have a retail copy of Windows XP, you can obtain
additional licenses for another computer or laptop by visiting the
following Microsoft Web site:

Also note that additional licenses are only available for Full or
Upgrade versions, OEM versions do not qualify.

:can i put my XP disk i purchased on more than one of my computers?

Yes.

:or can it only be registered to one?

You don't even need to register it on the first installation. If it's
activation you mean, then yes you can install it on more than one computer,
depending on you know what and how to tell the nice Product Activation of
the 'facts'. The Irony of it and I speak from experience you're more likely
not to have issues with product activation nor WGA as the so called
'legitimate' installs seems to have posted here.
