does anyone know if it is possible to put xp on say a 1gb memory card and
have it boot from power on?

Topic comes up frequently. Seems to be a process that many folks
want and try to work up a solution. To my knowledge is there is no
formal way to accomplish it. Even if you could squeeze XP onto a
Flash device it would run slow and if used on alternate PC's would
need constant reactivation. Just Google around for XP on Flash &
you'll find lot's of wish list, attempts to get it to work. To me it's like
a good "Weekend Throw-Away" project, but I wouldn't spend a
lot of time on it or expect a successful outcome. Portable XP could
be done on a external SATA drive - but that's a newer technology.

I think thats what Windows XP Embedded is for? so you can boot from a CD or
removable drive, although I think it is incredibly slow!

Yes. It's possible. And yes, people do it.

Not so sure about the size unless you get rid of a lot of the crap that gets
installed as standard, but yes you can install to a flash card. This was
done by one of the UK computer magazines. Research the footprint, 1Gb may be
too small though depending on just what you install.
