I have a copy of XP that I loaded on a computer that is no longer in use.
Can I now load my copy on a different computer and activate it?

legally you'd have to actually remove it from your previous computer...
however if it's been over 120 days...you could activate the new install

If you have a "Retail Version" of Windows XP, you may
install it on another computer once you remove it from
the old computer by reformatting the hard drive.
If you have an "OEM Version" of Windows XP, that
version cannot be installed on a different computer since
an OEM license is permanently bound to the first computer
it was installed and activated on.

Perhaps. If Retail, yes, if OEM the license is tied to the original
computer it was installed on.

Im not sure what you mean by the 120 days. How will xp know if its been
removed from the old computer?

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

If it's been over 120 days since the last time you changed any hardware
on the old computer, the record has been wiped clean on Microsoft's
servers.

As far as removing the old installation, that's what you *should* do to
comply with the EULA. MS has no way of knowing whether you did it or not.
