When I go to shut down XP I have to exit by changing users
and then I can close down my computer. Iwas shutting down
normally then the system changed and required me to close
through a back door. Can anyone offer a suggestion?

I am having the same problem. After a virus attack, I had to completely reload XP and now I cannot shut down or even logoff a user. This results in memory issues because users can't be logged off. If you find a solution, please e-mail me at

And if you reply with your e-mail address, I'll do the same if I figure it out.

I read the link below and it doesn't address the specific problem I'm experiencing. I can logoff using Ctrl-Alt-Del and then select the "Users" tab and clicking the "Logoff" button. It won't work from the "Start" key, nor will the computer shutdown from the "Start" key.

Hi,

Ok, so then you need to discover what background process or application is
causing it. Hit ctrl+shift+escape, end all applications. Try again from the
start button - does it work? Yes? Good, that means the issue is with one of
those applications you just ended. No? Ok, then start again, this time going
to the processes tab. "End process" on a couple of them (don't panic, WinXP
won't let you kill a system critical process), then try again. Repeat until
shutting down works correctly. The trick is to isolate which process is
causing it, then address why that process is running.
