I want to network my new PC running Windows XP with my other PC running Windows 2000. Both are connected to a DSL router and hub via Ethernet. When I run the wizard from XP I can create a network setup disc for use in the other PC. But the setup is not compatible with Windows 2000 - only home versions. How can I do this ?

The default network settings are compatible in XP and 2000, so
networking should just work. Specifying the same workgroup name on
both computers will make networking a little easier.

Thanks. How do I specify the workgroup name ? And will this be an issue since my PC with 2000 is also connected to my company via DSL and IPSec VPN

Since the PC is used on the company network, check with the IT staff
at work to see how to set it up for home use. Some companies have
policies and procedures governing such use.

Hi,

I have problems of networking XP home with 2000 pro. I tried to find
all relevant links on the internet and could not get satisefactory
result.

Here is what I have: ( I tried to give as much detail as I can)
1 pc installed with window2000 pro and the other one with window XP
home.
Both machine have independent dial-up connection to internet. Both
machine are connected through a hub for local area network connection.
In XP, the network is setup using wizard. In 2000, pretty much is
default network setting. Both machine are configured as the same
workgroup with unique own machine name. Both machines are set with
shared folders.

The problem: I can see/access xp machine from 2000 machine, but not
the 2000 machine from xp machine. From 2000 network neighborhood, I
can see xp. But from xp, there is nothing visible. Looking at
workgroup on xp, I can see only the xp machine itself.

For diagnosis, I can ping each machine from the other. But when I
tried START|RUN \\computer_name_of_2000 from xp machine, It prompts
error message saying Network Path Not Found. As a further test of
network connection, I installed VNC on each mahcine to see if I can
fully access other by remote login in, I found no problem to access
other machine with VNC. Looking at the xp machine document (network
configuration in wizard) regarding network settup, it recommends the
xp as a single point for internet shared connection to a DSL/Cable
modem, other machine are then connected to each other through hub. It
says if each machine has direct access to internet by connecting all
machines to a hub and then to DSL/Cable modem, file folder and print
sharing may be blocked because of the internet connect firewall. I
tried to disable ICF, it still doesn't work.

I heard the XP home might be the reason as being unrealiable for
networking. I have friends who have XP pro, saying their network all
works fine. The only difference is they have DSL/Cable modem, mine is
dial-up. I don't think internet connection should have something to do
with LAN connection!? What if don't care about internet connection,
should peer-to-peer LAN just work? Another fact, McAffe anti-virus
program installed on xp. Norton anti-virus is on 2000. People saying
anti-virus may also have a role?

Your help is greatly appreciated!
