XP Networking problem

I have two machines both running XP Pro. I have had a fully working Network
and suddenly it's failed . I can Ping both machines from either end and can
file share but no ICS. I know this looks like a Firewall issue but I have
turned everything off. This happened once before about a month ago and the
only way I could solve it was to re-install XP on the client, then all was
OK. Is there something I'm missing with firewalls, I'm running Norton and
have been for a long time with no problem. Windows Firewall is off on both
machines

Powercycle all hardware and software componunts and test

If that does not work supply more info.

Webstar cable modem ( Modem only, not router) Host PC has two NICs, one
directly to modem and one to client on a crossover cable. That's it, very
simple

Bob,

What firewalls have you turned off?

What Norton product are you running? NIS? NAV? Both?

What changes have you made on the client since you re installed XP?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Running NIS & NAV. Initially disabled NIS and turned of XP Firewall ( never
normally use it anyway). Yesterday removed NIS and NAV completely from
client, but still the same result. It's really weird, can do everything but
connect to the Net. The client is my son's PC, as far as I know, no major
changes have been made since it worked, possibly any XP updates as it is on
Autoupdate, I guess I could be radical and system restore back to when it
worked, I would still like to know what caused it for curiosity if nothing
else

Bob,

perhaps you want to peruse
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm. With some luck the
problem and its solution is described there.
