XP Network setup wizard will not start

I am trying to set up a home network but when I click on
the Network Setup Wizzard nothing happens. Absolutely
nothing! Is there a patch or a place where I can download
a new wizard?

Usually this happens when your Network Connections folder is emtpy, try
fixing that first...

First make sure that your Network Connections Service and Remote Access
Connection Manager services are running. If they are then compare the LAN
connections in the connections folder with the Network Adapter drivers in
device manager. If there is a Network Adapter driver that doesn't have a
corresponding connection in the connections folder then try reinstalling it.

Thank you for your prompt reply, however I am afraid I
did not understand what you said. I am fairly new to
computers and I think I will need a step by step
walkthrough. Think of it as telling your mother how to do
it. Can you explain it in an easier way? Thank you

Start / Run "services.msc". This will show you the services control panel.
See if the two services mentioned below have started in their status column.

Post back with your results and I'll explain the rest.

OK, I typed that on the main computer and it says that
the network connections service is started and the remote

No, Win98 works differently. I'm assuming you can't get the network setup
wizard to run on the XP machine.

Now you need to check the second part of the instructions. Run
"devmgmt.msc" to get Device Manager and "ncpa.cpl" to get the Network

Well that sounds correct. However the connection folder not showing all
connection is the only reason I know of for the Network Setup Wizard failing
to start. You still might try reinstalling your one LAN card.

I don't know what else would cause the wizard not to run. The good thing is
that you can do anything that the wizard would do manually. Since you only
have the one adapter probably you just need to turn on the firewall and
maybe change the workgroup name.

So how do I do it manually? How do I turn on a firewall
and change a workgroup name? I'm sorry but I just dont
know that much about all of this. I really wanted to set
up a home network so that the old computer could use the
printer attached to the XP machine, as well as get to the
files I have on the new computer.

-----Original Message-----
I don't know what else would cause the wizard not to run. The good thing is
that you can do anything that the wizard would do manually. Since you only
have the one adapter probably you just need to turn on the firewall and
maybe change the workgroup name.

-----Original Message-----
Well that sounds correct. However the connection
folder
not showing all
connection is the only reason I know of for the
Network
Setup Wizard failing
to start. You still might try reinstalling your one
LAN
card. and
confers no rights.
Sorry, I'm a bit confused too. I have one adapter in the
Device manager and one LAN connection in the folder. The
adapter says it is running properly. This is what shows
up in the connections folder: Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network
Connection and its the same in the device management.

I tried reinstalling the driver on the old

there is still only one thing showing in the

I
install the driver in the computer running 98, I get a
window that says there is a file that is older
than
one
already on the computer and they suggest to leave it.
So
I leave it, should I say to change it?

-----Original Message-----
Yes I am trying to set it up with XP. There is only
one
adapter showing up in the connections folder,
the
one
from the main computer. So I will try
reinstalling
the
adapter on the computer running 98. I am using a USB
to
Ethernet adapter on the old computer, will this work
ok?

-----Original Message-----
No, Win98 works differently. I'm assuming you can't
get
the network setup
wizard to run on the XP machine.

Now you need to check the second part of the
instructions. Run
"devmgmt.msc" to get Device Manager and "ncpa.cpl" to
get the Network
Connections Folder.

To reinstall a Network Adapter Driver, right click
it,
click uninstall, and
when it is done uninstalling reboot the
computer
and
it
should be
reinstalled.

If they are

Start / Run "services.msc". This will show you
the

See if the two services mentioned below have
started
in

Post back with your results and I'll explain the
