I Recently purchased a second hand laptop and didn't
realise it had been connected to a network previously. I
cant gain access to any admin privlages (I have access to
a guest account), I cant add a new user as an
administrator, I cant install a new copy of XP over the
top of it (because I dont have administrator access) and
IBM's product recovery has been disabled by the
administrator through the bios settings which I need a
password for.

The guy I bought this from has since dissappeared.

Any help would be appreciated

did you setup this computer or some one else? it should ask you for logon
and password when setup.

Must have been the old network administrator for who owned
this PC. Cant get in contact with him

Hi Jay,
administrator, I cant install a new copy of XP over the
top of it (because I dont have administrator access) and

If you do have your own xp install cd then there's no reason why you can't
just boot from the CD, tell setup to reformat and then reinstall the
operating system from scratch. I do this often and am never queried about my
user status.
If I bought a used pc then a reformat would always be my first job - any
software on there probably wouldn't be licensed to you anyway.

Contact IBM. It sounds like a T20 or higher model, and
I've seen this before. IBM's internal security prevents
any physical access to the system boards as well.

Good Luck.
