Bill

From my laptop (Win2000) I can see my XP machine fine with appropriate
access including internet.
However from my XP machine I can see my laptop icon but when I attempt to
open I get:....
" xxxx\\ is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. The account is not authorized to log on from
this station.

I have tried disabling Norton and Xp firewall and I have switched Simple
File Sharing on and off.

I have run troubleshooting wizard with no success.

Bill,

Disabling NIS may not be sufficient. Many have reported un installing
it to be the only solution. Or configure it properly. Set it to
trust local computers, and allow traffic from trusted computers: "TCP
139, 445; UDP 137, 138, 445".

When you disable Simple File Sharing, do you have a working Guest
account? Or are you using Classic authentication? Check the Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools). Under Local
Policies - Security Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and
security model", and ensure it's NOT set to "Classic - local users
authenticate as themselves", if you want to use the Guest account.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
