XP missing Mouse in Device Manager

I tried sending this to MS directly, but since I don't
know the PID, I couldn't! I bought XP Home Edition (full
not upgrade). I put it on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 7000)
and after it goes thru the whole shebang w/ loading, my
mouse doesn't work. I add add'l drivers, try a total of 3
mice -- nothing.

I check in the DEVICE MANAGER and there is NO (none, zip,
zilch) listing for Mouse or Pointer or anything. I then
try to ADD HARDWARE -- and it's not listed in that choice
either.

So what am I supposed to do? I've looked everywhere -- but
at Dell and here and can't find where this has been
brought up (obviously I can't go back and read all the
newsgroup postings).

Can anyone help? Or tell me a PID I can use for XP (I
tried using my ME one and of course the system knows the
difference!)

Thanks!

It still doesn't work. Any other ideas? The only 'good'
thing is I was able to get the PID info, so I'll try
writing MS directly.

Appreciate your help.

You're welcome. Sorry it didn't work.

One thing I never asked the first time is: What kind of pointing device is
attached to the laptop? Are you using the internal touchpad only? Have you
tried plugging a normal mouse into one of the ports (serial/PS2/USB) on the
back and seeing if that will get seen by XP on startup?
