Hi Hans;
I misunderstand a lot of stuff. Sorry I could not be of more help.
Please post back with what you find. If I can't help and you get it
figured out, you would probably be helping someone else.

Hi Hans;
You bet. Computers are fun aren't they? ;o) It is really tough
trying to troubleshoot long distance. OK, you say, "no sound at all."
If I understand you correctly, not a mike problem then.
This is acommon XP problem.
Go here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm
Scroll down to, "Where did my sounds go?" Click the ? to expand.
Scroll through and see if anything applies to your problem.

Let us know what your friend finds out. I am really curious.

Hi Wes,

The Mic is in the correct jack these things are red in color and
the same place as before.
Yesterday I put back an image of Win 2k and checked the settings
there I could open the advance in voice section
The playback etc works well that I have checked many times
I have done test hardware like you explained.
I have two computer with the same problem so its easy to compare them
Under hardware the sound card drivers are in in No.1 OK
The comp it is brand new and with a build on motherboard sound
device C-Media AC97 Audio device, when I expanded it I found the
Midi devices and Mixer devices I had them on and off and that worked
when off
no sound at all.
I have done a sound recording test, nill
The other comp. has a VIA AC’97 audio controller on both I have
checked the drivers
Further there is Legency Audio driver
I also loaded the Win XP disk and did optional components install
MSN explorer
Management & tools
Accessories & utilities
IIS
But no difference, so I did a system restore and uninstalled it

why I have this on 2 computers

Hans;
Let me start by asking a dumb question. Do you have other
sounds? CD, MIDI, System Sounds?
I just pulled out my microphone and dusted the cob webs off it.
I have not used it for five years. In fact, I plugged it into the
old on-board Sound Card mike jack. I forgot that I had added a
Sound Card. I got it plugged into the correct jack.
I did this: Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Voice
tab/Test Hardware button/ran through the deal/clicked both Volume
buttons/made adjustments. Worked fine.
I opened Sound Recorder and made a recording and played it back.
Not to insult you, is the mike plugged into the correct jack?
Microphone (Red), Line-In (Blue) If you are plugged into the
Line-In jack the mike may still work (even though the Impedance [Z]
may be wrong) but the volume would be controlled from Line-In not
Microphone. What do you have for a Sound Card? I have a
Creative SoundBlaster PCI512. Try this: Open Control
Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Hardware tab/highlight your Sound
Card/click the Properties button/Properties tab/click the + next to
Mixer Devices/Does it list one?/highlight it and click the
Properties button/is use mixer feature on this device selected?

Hans;
You do not need to be concerned with Speech Recognition,
unless that is what you are trying to do.
Try the following to test your mike:
To open Sound Recorder, click Start, point to Programs,
point to Accessories, point to
Entertainment, and then click Sound Recorder.
To record a sound:
1.. Make sure you have an audio input device connected to your
computer. Example of audio input device: microphone.
2.. On the File menu, click New.
3.. To begin recording, click Record . Say a few words.
4.. To stop recording, click Stop .
To play a sound:
1.. On the File menu, click Open.
2.. In the Open dialog box, double-click the sound file you
want to play.
3.. Click Play to start playing the sound.
4.. Click Stop to stop playing the sound.
