Have my original disks, had the sticker stuck on the back of my laptop
screen, had the screen replaced last year.

Started a fresh load. reformat etc... so no regedit to find it in.

When started loading and asked for the key I relealised that I don't have
the key sticker any more, just all my disks.

What is the process of finding out what my key is, without having to go buy
new?

If the laptop is still under warranty, you contact those who sold it to you.
They MAY have the number you purchased with it.

Chances are, however, you will be purchasing a new copy of Windows XP.

Doesn't MS keep a database of its registered users? Or will MS not help?

No they don't keep some sort of database..
Most people do not "register" anyway.

And in this case, being a laptop and the description of the "sticker" tells
me it was likely an OEM version, which is NOT supported directly by
Microsoft, but by the OEM that sold it. This is one of the reasons it is
cheaper to get OEM versions rather than retail.

Bob;
Contact the laptop manufacturer, they are the only source for your OEM
Windows XP.
Microsoft may not be able to help since it is OEM.

Otherwise you will need to buy Windows XP.

Did you "double check" the bottom of the "Laptop"? This is the normal
location for the OEM sticker on a laptop.

OEM support for an operating system? That sounds like the Catch-22 of
Catch-22's. I'd hate to be going down that particular road.

If OEM do you have the recovery CD (s) which do not usually require a
product key to restore system.
