XP Logs on then logs off

As soon as I logon to XP it start to load the user settings and then almost
right away logs off of its own accord and hangs. Any ideas?

Could be that the userinit entry in the registry is changed. Please navigate
to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Please ensure userinit has this value:

C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Or you may need to download a special hotfix from MS:
