I would like to set up XP so that when the system boots
up it will logon automatically to a pre-defined account.
I know this can be done in the registry, but I don't know
where. Can someone help? Thank you.

Download and install *TweakUI for XP*

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

There is an option within to do this for you. No need to take the risk of
editing the registry
