I have forgotten my password to log on to Windows XP. Evidently I do not
have a password disk. What can I do?

Log on as administrator and change your usual account's password.

Okay, that probably didn't really help, because you probably either don't know
or forgot the administrator password, or your usual account IS administrator,
or you may not know how to log in as administrator.

You should really only use the account administrator to fix/install things,
not as a normal login. Your situation is one of the reasons why, and why
there is the user administrator in the first place.

Try nothing (leave the box blank and just press enter) for the administrator
password. Often there is no password set for this account - which is also a
bad idea. It is a good idea to have a password for administrator - but make
sure that someone can remember it a year (or whatever) later.

If you have the Welcome Screen type of login (cute icons for each user)
instead of the secure Ctrl-Alt-Del login, the user administrator normally does
not show up on that screen. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del TWICE, and the login screen
will have a place where you can type in the username administrator.

If you cannot find any other way in, go to
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
where you can download a disk image to create a boot disk that will let you
reset your password. Make sure you read all of the instructions!
(This is why a computer is never really secure if someone has physical access
to it and can get it to boot from a floppy or CD)
