XP Locks up during boot

I have XP Pro installed on my desktop computer. Yesterday, I turned it on, and to my surprise, the program will not boot up past the Windows XP black screen. It gets to that point and freezes. It will not boot up in any mode, not even Safe mode. Additionally, it won't even boot up with the emergency recovery disk. I was able to scan the system using my Norton virus disk, but that stil wouldn't get me into windows. After many trials and restarts, I was able to determine that the .vxd (I, unfortunately, failed to write down the exact file name) file in the windows\system32 folder was/is corrupted. When trying to boot in safe mode, the system hangs up at the \windows\system32\drivers\apg440.sys file. Does anyone know a fix to this problem? Is there a fix to this problem, or am I just dead in the water?
