Keep having a problem with XP professional locking up on
my dell laptop. I have wiped out the hard drive and
replaced it and reinstalled drivers, utilities and
software, and again, on the desktop screen, it sometimes
locks up, mouse won't move, and can't do a CTRL-ALT-DEL.

Anyone know what could possibly be the problem and how to
fix it?

I am also having the same proble, first I thought there is some problem
with svchost.exe but now when the system locks up, I am unable to do
anything, only option is to do a hard restart. wny one knows why this
happens?

Liza, has the machine done this from the moment you unpacked it? If yes, and
it's under warranty, I'd call Dell. Or, go to the Dell site, enter your
service tag number, and download the latest drivers, even if you think they
might not be newer than the ones you installed (from the recovery CD?).

So, when you used the restore cd it started locking up from the getgo?
IE before you installed anything else like new drivers/other software
etc?

Or did you not test the basic factory default installation first?

Did you use their restore cd in the first place?

No its a custom build PC and I bought XP Pro seperetly.
I have installed XP Pro fresh install.
