I am using a Dell Dimension 4300 that came loaded with
the home edition of Windows XP. Since the first of July
I have had to reload the operating system once, and do a
repair on it 3 times, in order to get it to boot up
properly. There are no current downloaded software or
software packages loaded that did not come already loaded
as basic on the computer.

This is getting to be very frustrating.

Can someone help?

Thanks,
Carol

Hi Carol,

After a re-install all programs, data, etc which are not included with
windows must be reinstalled.

Go to www.pcpitstop.com for a system diagnostics check.
Try updating your video/display device driver in the
device manager after downloading the latest version from
your video card maker's web site, or your PC maker's site.
Check for any BIOS updates too for the motherboard.
Buy and install a good system utility program such as
Norton's Utilities or Ontrack FixIt Utilities, or System
Mechanic. These will also clean out the system registry of
most invalid entries. Mayby try the "msconfig.exe" tool to
check the number of apps starting at boot up too. Also be
sure there is enough fully running cooling fans in your PC
case, and it's not over heating. Update your device
drivers, and scan for viruses. With a utility program, run
a system diagnostic test, mostly for the hard drive and
the RAM memory. Frequent errors can be caused by either
over heating and/or a bad or failing RAM memory module.
And if your PC has less than 256 MB of RAM, upgrade your
memory as soon as possible, because XP really needs plenty
of RAM for multitasking.

Sounds like Dell may have sold you a "lemon." Contact them and
insist that they honor their warranty.

That's unacceptable for a NEW system. Speak with Dell Customer Service (NOT
TECH SUPPORT), and nicely demand a new system. Assuming that you paid for
the system via credit card, if you meet any resistance, just say that you
are prepared to let your credit card company handle this. That has always
worked for me when any of my clients has received a defective system.
Always speak in a nice tone to Customer Service, don't threaten or demean
the person you're speaking with. If you feel that you're not getting
anywhere, ask to speak with a supervisor. If that doesn't work, then phone
your credit card company, and have them take care of it for you. I have
never had to go that far though.

Yes! Do this right away - don't wait! And don't let Dell try and send
you a refurbished system as replacement. This happened to one of my
clients and the refurbished system was a lemon too. She finally had me
build her a new system. I would say that most of my clients with Dells
(and I bought one too, once upon a time) have had good experiences with
the company, but your experience is not unknown either!
