XP Language

Is there an option where I can do a reinstall of XP Home
and get the language to be Spanish instead of English? I
saw a discussion of how the keyboard can be changed to a
different language but is there also a way that the entire
operating system would be presented in Spanish without
buying a new copy of XP in Spanish? I have a Dell
Dimension 4550 with XP Home installed in English by Dell.
Thank you ......

No, in order to do what you are describing you would need to purchase the
Spanish version of XP.

Go to Control Panel then Regional and Language Options.
You can then change your files from english to spanish
manually.

Thank you Michael,

What is the purpose of the region/language in Control
Panel? Is it only for the keyboard? I wonder why
Microsoft does not offer this as a feature. Maybe there
is not much demand. I will be giving my computer to my
wife's family in Colombia. I assume that I would purchase
a spanish version of XP and then do the install. Is this
a big deal? Thanks george

No, there's no such option/feature.

You cannot upgrade or convert from one language version of the OS
to another, so you'll have to purchase and use the full version of
English WinXP to perform a clean installation.

Bruce, thanks for the reply. I went to the link that you
gave me and it directed me to this link ...

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/evaluate/MuiOvw.asp

which describes "Comparing Windows XP Professional
Multilingual Options". Apparently you can get a resource
kit that installs on Win XP Pro that will allow the use of
other languages. It describes this as something that can
be configure by the UI if the user remains within the
network. A German user could go to England and log in
with his UI and work in German if the computer had the
Multilingual Kit and he remained in his network.

Do you know anything about this capability? Maybe it is
new. Sounds a little complicated to me .... thanks for
your response ..... george

You're welcome, George.

Yes, it's for the keyboard as well as a few features that the system uses
based on region.

Full language support, dialog boxes, headers, headings, the OS shell, all
shell apps and extensions, the requirements of which are major, hence, the
OS is sold in language editions.

Those packs are only available through the volume license
program. :(

Did you know that when you use :( at the end of a sentence
that's delivering bad news that it's the equivalent of
saying, "I think the OP is too stupid to know that this
is not the answer he was hoping for."?

As far as I can determine from Microsoft's web sites, the MUI is
available _only_ for addition to the English Volume Licensed versions
of WinXP Pro.

Not my intention at all, Wislu. I'm sympathetic to their plight and the
emoticon is emphasis of my feelings on the matter.

Thank you for a most complete answer ...

Control Panel> Regional and Language gives some options for alternative
languages but its scope is somewhat limited.

Not unless you have the English edition and I don't know if you could
install one language edition over another. I believe you would have to do a
clean install which would entail wiping the dirve on which XP currently sits
and installing the English version.
