XP killed my internet connection

I am connecting a PC and a MAC (with virtual PC) to a hub, which connects to a Zytel DSL modem.

Since upgrading from ME, the PC connection doesn't work. The MAC does.

The connection to the hub seems to be active, but I can't use Earthlink or WinPoet to connect to the net, nor do any of the various network configurations I've tried seem to recognize the zytel modem.

There are other problems, sound card doesn't work, etc. but these are driver issues and could be resolved if I could connect.

Questions:
Can I activate without an internet connection?
Will anything I can download here, copy to disk and install on the PC help me?
What is the proper procedure for a network connection (I do not want to network between the pcs or a server, only to the hub and shared modem.)
Any other advice?

You say the MAC is virtual? Did you by chance uninstall the Virtual PC
software first, before upgrading WinME to WinXP Pro? If not, the Virtual PC
software may have exclusive use of your hardware that's not working -
network car, sound card, etc. How virtual PC's are handled behind the
scenes are totally different between Win9x (95, 98, ME) and WinNT (NT, 2k,
2k3, XP) OS's, which will have different exe's and dll's in the Program
Files Directory, along with the system32 directory. You may end up saving
the MAC Virtual PC data file (as it would just appear as a large data file
to WinXP), then doing a format and clean install.
