Hibernate is NOT enabled on my computer.

If I allow the computer to sit for a protracted period -- let's say
several hours -- without using it I experience the following behavior:

1) If I attempt to open a program the hard disk activates but the
program does not open on the monitor.
2) If I open task manager at this point, the program does not appear
in the tasks window but the corresponding process DOES appear in the
processes window.
3) If I attempt to shut down windows, it usually will not shut down
via the task manager shut down command -- I have to use the button on
the computer. Sometimes at this point I will get a message about some
program not shutting down. Clicking on the "end now" button does
nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

OK, but have you set the monitor and hard drives to never shut down ?

Also have you clicked the APM tab and checked the line - Enable advanced
power management support ?

The drives never shut down. System standby: never. The monitor shuts
down after 20 minutes. These settings have not changed for ages and
the problem is new.
Where do I find the APM tab and the line you mentioned? There is an
advanced tab on the power dialog box, but no enable advanced pms line.

Control panel, power options,
You can set the times to never,
Click the APM tab, click enable advanced power management support.
If the APM tab is missing, then you have to upgrade the BIOS chip.
