First of all, Windows XP is an operating system. It cannot "fry" anything.
If you connected your iPod and it was damaged, the *HARDWARE* in your
computer is at fault. The problem is not related to Windows XP, but with a
voltage problem on your USB ports. On inexpensive, entry level computers,
the design of the USB ports and associated electronics may not be as tightly
controlled, thus your motherboard delivered more voltage than the iPod could
handle.

Then your USB port is improperly wired or you actually connected it to
the firewire port.

XP, in fact no OS, will cause a hardware damage condition like you
describe.
