xp is not downward compatable it has programers making stupid
dicisions about leaving the million or so 98 users. (most of these
computers are in third world countries who got them from help
groups!!! XP IS A SNAKE IN THE GRASS !!!

Cry a river, build a bridge, and upgrade! 98 is 10 years old! You've had
plenty of time to upgrade as XP has been out for 6-7 years now. And XP does
support many 98 programs you just have to run them in compatibility mode.

Why not whine about Vista? Why not whine about programs that require
more memory than the Windows 98 box can support. I think maybe you
posted to the wrong newsgroup.

XP does support most Windows 98 programs, and also lots of even older
stuff. I even run some programs written for Windows 3.x under XP with
no problems.

Where older programs do have problems running under Windows XP it is
often because the authors of those programs used "cute programmers
tricks" such as bypassing the operating system function calls and
instead accessing the hardware directly. This was not recommended
practice for Windows 98 but it did work. However in Windows XP it is
totally prohibited, and programs that do these kind of things will
crash and burn.

No the guy is whining about the programs written for XP won't run on
Windows 98.

Of course it isn't. There's a good reason, it's not the same family as
Windows 98. Win 9x was basically a 32-bit wrapper around the old 16-bit win
3.1 core. It's got a lot of fancier looking features and a lot of nice
additions, but it was designed to improve the desktop experience. Windows XP
comes from a different family altogether, the Windows NT family, which was
developed way over a decade ago in conjunection with IBM. They made OS2,
which was their offshoot of the technology. This has been known for years
and years. Of course Windows XP and other NT oses such as Windows 2000 won't
be compatible with Windows 98 as their only distantly related. It's like
trying to put a mustang engine in a volkswagen bug. Doesn't work as they're
not related. Before you make wild accusations, read up on the subject as
this is something that was well known at the time, to Win 9x users as well
as NT 4 and Win 2000 users.

And within the realm of hand-me-downs, most of the future computers in
the needy third world countries will also be donated Windows XP units.
This is the way of progression. And being one generation behind in the
OS does not necessarily mean total obsolesence. The onlyl caveat is that
the contributing help groups need to assure that Windows XP will activate
properly under WPA.

What wrong with a snake in the grass? Snakes perform a valuable function in
the ecosystem.

RIGHT ON!!! listen MS is the only software company that makes up
grades to it's software and calls it an entirely different name and
charges you like it's a new product. That's one of the reasons they
hauled their ass into court and brought them up on monopoly charges. I
can go on and on about how they hurt the programers in this country.
