hello,
i bought a new x61 laptop which doesn't have any CD rom drive.
i have an external USB drive.
the laptop come with windows vista OS.
i want to install windows XP in other partition, i.e. i want to make
it dual boot.
i can't install directly from CD while windows vista is executing as
it is not allowing me.
i am able to boot the laptop through CD rom but when it starts
installing the windows xp from CD rom it is not finding any hard
drive.
means it is not detecting any devices to install the software.
please help me and reply me back.
thanks very much in advance,
regards,
hitesh ughreja.

First, did you check to make sure there are XP drivers for that laptop? Go
to Lenovo's tech support site and see. If there are no XP drivers, you
can't install XP the way you want. You'll be better off using a virtual
solution such as Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (free) or VMware Workstation
(not free but I like it best).

If there are drivers for XP, then you need the drive controller drivers
because your hard drive is apparently SATA. You would get those drivers
from Lenovo's website and put them on a floppy. Since I'm sure the laptop
doesn't have a floppy drive, you'll need a USB floppy drive.

Malke

probably the best solution for you would be to use VPC2007 and run XP in a virtual environment.
VPC2007 is a FREE download from microsoft.

or investigate the possibility of returning the laptop and getting another with XP pre installed.
