I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 98SE to XP Home
Edition. From my CD drive I get the messages about not
being able to copy...device not working properly.

The MS Support site identifies these messages and suggests
trying a different CD/DVD drive and that maybe the disc is
bad. From a new DVD drive, the installation starts but
defaults back to the initial screen before I can get any
information entered.

Any ideas?

It is my understanding there is an option to "Install XP" from your hard
drive. This means XP will copy all necessary files to your hard drive and
then install from there. The option is supposed to be on the same drop down
memu that ask if you want to upgrade. Check it out. It might help alleviate
the issue with losing the CD ROM drive.
