I'm upgrading from Win98 to XP Home (2 days now) on a
Dell Inspiron7000 laptop, I get to the point
of "Installing Windows" "Installing Devices" and at 50
minutes remaining the screen goes black and the hard
drive light makes about 10 single blinks the short steady
blinks then shuts down just like at a regular shutdown
except that the power light remains on.

I have gone back to the old operating system and removed
some programs, temp files and printer drivers. On my
first attempt a file (WBDBASE.DEU) would not install but
worked OK on subsequent attempts. The black screen
problem remains however. I'm not sure what to do from
here? Would a New Installation be better?

Just got worse can't uninstall and use old system?
Appreciate any suggestions.

i would suggest that u backup all vital data to u and do
a clean install..... do you have xp home full version or
upgrade version....

This is the best advise I've seen on this topic - I have yet to run into a
problem doing a clean install of XP over a formatted drivce (do it in FAT32
and let XP do the conversion to NTFS during the installation). I don't know
anyone who has had complete success doing the upgrade from Win98 to XP. On
the topic of "upgrade" or "full version" disk - you always get a full
version disk when you buy the upgrade. Just make sure you have the original
CD that contains your full version of Win98, as it will ask you to prove
you're eligiable for the upgrade and you'll have to insert the disk that
contains the setup files for Win98.
