Can someone help me out here !!!!
My XP crashed last weekend and I haven't been able to settle the "conflict"
between the harddisk and XP. They wont work together again. I wonder if a
virus is the secret agent in this situation.
I am trying to install XP on a harddisk but not going well. I am doubting
if the disk is faulty.

Problem is, the disk is recognised in the Bios. When Xp starts, it performs
necessary checks but then at the point of installation it gives no hard
drive or even the partition. It sets only a zero with no option to say
"install on ......."
I have tried FDisk / status and get all details (1 Disk; 38162MB;
38162Free)
Tried to do an Fdisk, then get = Error reading fixed Disk.
Fdisk / mbr= Master boot code has NOT been updated.
Tried to Format but: Format not supported. (obviously because of the NTFS
issue)
It is a Western Digital Disk so I downloaded and tried their diagonistic
tool but= Error reading Disk.

Is it the end of the Disk ? Any more tools to
try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help needed.

You doubt the hard disk is bad? Why?
Fdisk says errror? WD diag says error?
When installing, XP should recognize HDD, then you create a parttion, then
format, then install. If BIOS resees HD, don' know why XP wouldn't.

Is this only hd in computer?

I have tried attaching a smaller harddisk also with xp installed as master
and this disk as slave.
What happens is, XP installs a new harddisk (that is this problem disk) but
in device manager it doesn't show it.

Let's stick with one problem!!
You put "problem" HDD in as slave in Working XP machine.
XP Installs "problem" HDD but doesn't show in device manager??
That doesn't make sense!!

Check the disk cables. If the WD Diags doesn't even see the disk then
it's either not connected properlty or the disk is toast.

This was the only disk in the pc.
What I have tried to do is, attach a smaller hdd as master with XP
installed on that and this problem disk as slave. XP sees it as a new disk,
installs and says it is ready for use.
Device manager says 2 disks- Location 0(0) and Location 1(1) obviously
master & slave. However going to computer management to try once again to
partition/format, there appears only the one new smaller disk- the 40GB
disk is not visible.
So what did XP see, and why is it not seeing it further.
