I recently had a hard drive go bad but all of the data
was not lost and I could still access what I needed. I
purchased a new hard drive and installed it as the master
and the old was made the slave. I did a full install of
XP pro. My problem is at startup the scan disk/check
disk option starts on the old drive and will not let me
cancel the operation. The pc hangs at this point and I
have to shut the machine down and disconnect the old
drive in order to fully boot. Is there any way to REM
out the check disk operation to skip the hang?

Thanks!

Mike

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. Then type in:
chkntfs /x e: , and hit enter. Reboot your computer.

Is there a way to get to the CMD prompt before a full boot? Also, is there a way to do a disk copy before loading XP?

I had a similar issue and fixed it by clearing out all the temp files on
second drive. like you I had to disconnect it and start pc, then reconnect
while running. then use device manager to update hardware. then I was able
to access the windows temp files and clear then.

I tried that but for some reason the device manager won't see the drive when I connect the cables. Compaq's BIOS only will let the system recognize the drives upon boot. For some reason XP won't see it when I attach.
