Hi All,

I am having a strange problem with my PC. I wanted to
load a fresh copy of XP on my PC, so I started with
reformatting the existing partitions and loading XP on a
fresh partitioned space. The installation and setup files
were copied from the CD-ROM. The PC then rebooted and
setup started automatically. HOwever, this did not
continue for long, the system kind of hung mid-way
through loading devices with 34 minutes remaining for
completion of setup. I had tried the same process a
multiple times since then, but on every occasion the PC
becomes sluggish and kind of hangs at exactly the same
place in the setup process. I have tried using a
different CD-ROM, but the same issue. I had tried letting
the setup run overnight, but the next day morning it
still showed 29 mins remaining for completion. I gave up
that effort. Please let me know if anyone have observed
this behavior before and if it is related to any faulty
hardware component.

Thanks,
Rudra

Rudra, try disconnect any device you don't need for the install. The less
drivers that the Install has to deal
with the less chance of a conflict.

It somtimes happens that the installation wil halt of fail when there is a worm / trojan or virus present on the disk. Especially if you were running Norton Anti Virus and failed to delete any of these from the Quarantine and Backup folders prior to reinstalling Windows.

Best way around this is to format the hard drive before proceeding with Windows installation.

Rich,
I did disconnect the PCI Soundblaster card and the modem
card that I had installed. The remaining devices came
with the installed motherboard. The same problem however
continued to occur.
Thanks,
Rudra

Rudra, try deleting and creating new partitions. You can do that with
the WinXP CD. Also, go into the
Bios and make sure Virus protection is Disabled and set to Optimal or
Default Settings.
