Okay, so I got this computer from a friend, and I don't want a lot of the stuff on it, so I just wanted to get rid of windows and re-install it, and start all over. Can anyone tell me how to go about doing this?

This is a good place to start:
How do I format my hard drive with XP installed so I can start over?

Be very careful, before you delete anything, I am having
enormous trouble to reinstall WinXP onto my notebook: For
about a year proud owner of a "TARGA Visionary 1900 WS"
notebook PC, which is a AMD based system with WinXP home
edition preloaded. The amentioned PC worked relatively
satisfactorily, but recently it developed more and more
system freezes and other errors, usually due to driver
confliccts (of devices I had deinstalled ages ages ago!)
and I was unable to log onto the internet or create any
new dialup connections - the option presented itself as
blanked out. I tried with the help of the WinXp help
ysytem and MS support site all sorts of measures incl.
viruschecking, WinXP-rerinstallation etc., but to no
avail, things got only worse eg. that most of my
application became inaccessible, and I was still unable to
get onto the internet. In the end I decided to download
my personal files onto a zip-disk, reformat the harddisk
and to perform a "clean install" of WinXP - this however
proved to be very difficult if not impossible. I have
already wasted numerous hours with many fruitless attempts
incl. numerous reformatting and partitioning, BIOS
updating etc. and seem to go in circles, and I am on the
verge of applying physical and destructive force to the
afore mentiond PC. Therefor be warned and I'd be very
grateful I you could hand on to me any constructive
suggestions how to solve my little problem and render this
notebook PC useable again by reinstalling a working OS.

The sequence of events on my last ateempt appearing on the
PC screen was as follows:

insertion of OEM MS Windows XP Home Edition [WinXP] disk
(Targa Product Recovery CD-ROM, Mat.Nr. 1041630,
prod. key K4VFW-CMP2D-4VTYF-492TR-2KMHQ)
"setup is expecting your hardware config. ..."
[blue screen] "win setup ... " (loading setup files)
"setup starting windows"
"welcome to setup"
"to setup win press 'Enter'"
[EULA] "press 'F8' to agree"
"to create a partition on unpartioned space press 'C'"
"to setup WinXP on selected item press 'Enter'"
"format using NMTFS file sys"
[setup formatting partion]
"to setup WinXP press 'Enter'"
[EULA] "press 'F8' to agree"
"to setup WinXP on selected item
(i.e. C: partition 1 [NTFS] 20003 MB)
press 'Enter'"
"you chose to install WinXP on a partition that contains
another OS,
which might cause the other OS to function improperly ...
To continue setup using this partition press 'C'"
"setup will install WinXP on partion C: ... ...
"Press 'Enter' to continue"
"Caution: A \Windows folder already exists
that may contain a win installation ...
will be overwritten ...
All files will be deleted ..."
To use the folder and delete the existing win
installation in it, press 'L'"
"Please wait while setup examines your disk ..."
"Please wait while setup copies files"
"Please wait ... (for this or the other) ..."
"This part of setup has completed sucessfully"
[sys reboot]
"setup is inspecting ypur PC's hardware config"
"win setup"
"setup is starting win"
"welcome to setup
to setup WinXP now, press 'ENTER'"
[EULA] ...

[et da capo ad nauseam infinitum!]

variant using downloaded WinXP setup disks:

(WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.exe)
"TARGA ready for you" splash screen
"setup is inspecting ..."
"win setup"
"please insert .. setup disk #2 into drive A:"
(insertion of disk #2 + 'Enter')
"File \ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
The error code is 7
setup cannot continue
press any key to exit."

Sincerely
Peter Mahr
