XP Install HELP!!!

I am trying to install XP on an older computer (it had Windows 98 on it). I
did do a compatability check prior to install, and it checked ok. The install
went good, but upon completion of the install, when it trys to go onto XP for
the first time, it freezes. I can go into safe mode, where it does work
(except the mouse). After figuring out how to get into device manager without
the mouse, the only conflict I found was a "?" in yellow for the video
driver- VGA Compatable. I think the computer is a "put together" with a mix
of components from different systems. I do not know how to locate the
manufacturer of the Video card. Can anyone tell me IF this could be the
problem, if it is, or could be, how I can look to see who the manufacturer is
of the video card. Device manager said it is in PCI slot 1, but this poor old
grandma does not know where to look, or even if this is the problem. If I can
not find the manufacturer (if this is the problem), is there someplace I can
go on the internet to download the driver?

Thanks for your reply Ray! Yes I did format first, after doing the
campatability check. Don't know if I upgraded my OS (operating system?) to
XP? Please explain.
