Xp install hangs

I've run XP-Home Upgrade 5 times now with the same result
each time: It hangs with only 1 minute to go while it's
deleting temp files created during the install.
I've let it sit for more than 3 hours and it goes nowhere,
although the flashing lights at the bottom flash; the
mouse works; the XP features window, describing all the
good things I'll be able to do, continues to change..

So is it really hung? What's happening?

I've searched the Knowlege base, as well as the web, and
can find no mention of hanging so close to the end of the
install.

I have a P4, 9GB of free space, and 128MB RAM.
Thanks, Kathy

I do not know a solution, but you could try formatting the hard drive and
install the upgrade clean. I believe it asks for your old Windows98/ME CD
during the install if it is an upgrade.

Greetings KC,

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I was installing Windows98se when
all of a sudden it just frooze. I later found it that was the hard disk that
was causing the problem.

You should try checking your hard disk if there's something wrong it. Try
and find someone who can check out your hard disk.

Jose Francisco

Try running chkdsk...

From Start Menu, select RUN (or press Windows Key + R) and type:

cmd

and press enter, or click OK

In the command line interface you're presented with, type:

chkdsk c: /f

....and press ENTER.

It'll tell you the drive is locked and cannot be checked, do you want to
check it next time you reboot?

Press Y to confirm this, then close the CLI and reboot.

The drive will then be checked for errors.

Thanks everybody.

I ran scandisk And chkdsk. THe disk was fine.
I ran the upgrade again, with a clean boot....still the
same.

So (with a backup of my C: drive on another drive), my
friend did an upgrade to Win2000 Pro. That went just fine.

Now, we've reformatted the drive and installed Win98,
since the XP upgrade will not work overtop of 2000Pro (We
forgot that the upgrade purchased was only for 98/ME!).

Hopefully, the XP upgrade will work from there. I will
update later.

Why are you messing around with 98 and 2000? Won't the Windows XP CD boot?
When you boot from the Windows XP CD, you will get the option to do a clean
install AKA partition and format. I always delete the partition and create a
new one just to make sure it's going to format the drive before installing.
