XP install CD can't see HD

After a new patch install, a game I was playing crashed to desktop with an
error message that said soemthing about a "Sanity Check" and Memory Block
such-and-such was "Insane". It then said "Object Not Found" and re-booted.
Each reboot ended with some kind an error related to "lsass.exe" and a system
error of "Object Not Found".

I tried to boot from my XP CD but after I choose to set-up XP I am told that
windows can't find any hard drived installed and I'm forced to quit out. The
machine then tries to finish booting and fails, giving me the above mentioned
error. The odd thing is that during the boot process I can see Master 1
listed as my HD (Maxtor 80GB), so it looks like the machine can see it even
if Windows can't.

Needing an immediate solution, I bought a new Seagate 200GB HD and put it
in, removing the original Maxtor 80GB HD and putting it in a HD enclosure. I
then figured that I could install Windows on the new HD and use it to access
the old one.

I ran the Seagate drive installation disk but came to a point where I
couldn't click "Continue" because the mouse drivers weren't working (doh).
So I figured I could format directly from the Windows set-up, but it still
tells me that there is no HD (even though during boot-up Master 1 is now
listed as "Seagate 200GB" and makes me quit out as mentioned above. The old
hard drive works fine in it's enclosure and I've been able to pull files from
it onto my laptop.

Anyway, as far as installing this new HD and setting up Windows on it what
am I missing? Why does the computer see the HD during the boot-up but
Windows can't see it? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. My thanks
in advance to anyone who can help.

Windows XP (bought new copy about 4 months ago)
Pentium 4, 1GB RAM
NVidia GForce 6800

Boot into your BIOS and set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive does.
Install your XP CD and reboot.
Watch the screen closely and it will tell you to press any key to boot with
the CD drive.
Install XP and delete all the partitions to start from a clean disk, create
partitions and format them in NTFS.
Continue installing.

As I mentioned, the problem is that the XP CD can't see a hard drive to
install to. In fact, I managed to run the Seagate install CD and format the
drive, but the XP CD still tells me there's no HD there and won't install the
OS.

Can anyone else suggest anything?

This may sound weird but I had a similar problem and it turned
out to be a bad SIMM. There is a Knowledge Base article about
it.

Is the new hard drive SATA? You may need to press F6 during the install and
install the drivers for your SATA controller during the Windows install.
