Hello there;
reading all this stuff I should consider myself lucky!
BUT,
how do you change the XP Installation Administration
Password when you don't know it and the dealer who
installed
it asks for $100 to reload XP for you?? You could walk-in
with a gun but that might not be a good idea. Would be
better to pass-by and say, Oh no prob, I fixed it!
That password disables most of DOS and allows just the
windows dir to show up! even CD install won't work.
I could erase the disk but i just wanted to repair my
XP installation. DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO RESET, CHANGE
or DISABLE the (pre)installation ADMINISTRATION PW??
You have to depress F8 to activate it when loading.
thank you.

There is to pre-installation Admin password. What you might be talking
about is the Recovery Console (boot to CD, and hit R when prompted to
Repair).

At the Recovery Console screen, you'll be prompted to enter the password for
the built-in Administrator account. This is the password that you selected
during the initial Windows setup, assuming you haven't changed it since
then.

It's also possible that this password is blank. Try just hitting Enter to
see if that lets you in.

Out of curiosity, what is it you're trying to do?

Thank you Mike for your reply.
Exactly what you wrote and that's what I m trying to do,
repair. I press enter and it just shows the windows dir,
will not run any exe (most dos commands are disabled),
will go just to the CD (no other directory) but will not
execute setup. It doesn't go ahead with repair of the
existing XP installation while it sees it on the disk as 1:
and I select it as 1.
I don't want to erase and reinstall. The pw it asks for if
installed, was by the dealer who asks for $$$$ to fix it!
?????

Can you boot the computer up normally? If so, Is your user name in the admin
group. you would then be able to reset the admin password. If you are able
to get into command console by just witting enter after you select the
installation you want to enter then you do not need the password. The reason
you can not get anywhere once you are there is because command console is
limited in its functions and does not allow you to browse every where on the
hard drive. If you want to do a repair install when you boot from the CD hit
enter to install not "r". then hit the f8 key to agree then you select "r"
for repair install. your data will not be lost at the point.

thank you Brian but the daemon thought of that too; won't
do repair, neither install it needs 1250meg and the disk
is 100 meg short (out of 40g!) and i can't erase what it
won't access. Do you know if there is .PWL or other
password listfile in the windows dir? I should just erase
the whole windows dir, it will not find anything and will
force a new install in the same dir. Is that going to
work though in XP as in 98?
