XP image for different hardware types possible?

Anyone know how to create one image to work in different hardware---usually
you will try to put an image on a computer with different chipset there will
be a blue screen with INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE...
I'm assuming this refers to the hard disk controller which has loaded the
specific driver for the original host pc

Any advice or experiences appreciated, also would this be a recommended
option?
 
One sort of makeshift solution to overcome the Mass Storage
Controller driver is the use of a Generic IDE/ATAPI driver. It's
not something I would use because of the chance of lower than
expected performance. Doing it this way gets XP up & running
on most platform Chipsets (Intel, VIA, nVidia & SIS). But on
1st boot you'll likely have to let XP re-enumerate the entire
Device tree and then remove all the original platform Chipset
drivers. You would then want to run Microsoft's SysPrep or a
tool from SysInternals called NewSID to ensure that each PC
has it's own Security Identifiers. Using a Generic IDE/ATAPI
controller is how I'll sometimes migrate a PC from one Chipset
to another when a "Repair" install cannot be done. Just browse
around the web, there are lots of articles of cloning and deploying
XP to client PCs. There are all kinds of things to consider, such
as number of clients to clone, so no single process works in every
situation.
