I've set up a laptop and desktop (both XP Home) connected
via a Linksys Wireless Router. All was fine. Now the
desktop cannot ping itself (either by IP address, name or
127.0.0.1), neither can it be pinged from the laptop.
All firewalls have been disabled, WEP is disabled, Guest
accounts are enabled on both machines. Both machines can
access the internet.I've tried reinstalling the desktop's
network adaptor, and resetting the TCP/IP stack.

No luck so far!

Does anybody have any ideas?

Don't just disable a firewall program. Un-install it, too, using the
un-install procedure provided by the program's author. Then go to
Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup, disable any firewall remnants, and
reboot.
