XP Home will not boot up

Since downloading critical updates when my Pc is started it goes to the F8 menu screen, no matter which option I chose, ie, Last Known Good, safe Mode, Normal it just returns to this menu screen. there are files that i would like to keep but i cannot get to them. Before I format and re-install. Any help would be appreciated.

Try a 'Repair' install of XP. The following article by MVP Michael Stevens

Perform a repair-install, it should keep your data.
