I have a laptop with XP home SP2 and Desktop XP Pro SP2 linked via
ethernet couplers. The Desktop has a USB Cable modem to the internet. The
two PCs can share files successfully and the Laptop can print via the
Desktop. My problem is that I would like to access the internet from the
laptop as well as the desktop, but nothing I do seems to allow that. What am
I missing? Or is it impossible? I guess this is in fact a common question,
but bear with me!

Problem solved. I assumed that the network wizard would set up the
TCP/IP parameters in the client (laptop) correctly. This turned out to NOT
be the case. I found that the "Use the following IP address" was set, and
also "Use the following DNS server addresses" was set, but with no address
for a DNS. First off, I unset the "Use the following IP address", this made
the system search about a bit, but the link sprang to life and I could
access the internet from the laptop. Just to prove the point, I went back to
setting up the IP address, and set the DNS addresses to the Desktop PC
address, and it all still works. I guess I just misunderstood how the wizard
left the situation, and what I needed to set up by hand. Certainly as a
result of this I've got a far better understanding of how it hangs together!
