I've got a 3 year old dual boot Dell w. ME and SuSE Linux.
I'd like to purchase the XP update, but also have the
opportunity to format the HD and begin all over with just
XP. Is this possible with the XP upgrade, or would I have
to purchase the 'stand alone' OS for $100 more? Thanks for
any help here...

In order to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP using the
"Upgrade Version", you'll need a Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME
installation CD, and not a manufacturer's "Restore CD". If you
do not own one of the older Microsoft Windows CDs, then you'll
need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP.

No, you don't have to purchase another os. You can use
the xp upgrade to format and install.
