Hi,
I have a Windows XP Home system that the specifics listed
about the OS are XP Home Version 2002 SP1. the computer
was purchased in March, 2003 and NO updates have been
applied to it since that time.

How do I know if I should do an update ??? I want to do
them ONLY when I would think that I shouldn't have to
UNDO it due to a problem with the update.

Should I always ASSUME that I should do the updates when
I get the messase that there are updates available ???

As you can see, I am a novice at this and trying be very
cautious about doing something that I might regret later.

Thanks in advance for your help & guidance...

While there have been some problems for some users with certain updates, in general I say you should always apply any Critical Updates since many times they involve patching security problems that have been discovered. Some may disagree with that, but I think the risk of not patching is greater than the risk that a Critical Update will cause a problem. If nothing else, wait a month from the release date to apply the patch, and/or search for the update number hear to see if there are any reports of problems. With so many to apply right now, investigating all of them may be more of a chore than it is worth.

As far as the Recommended Updates, review the description to see if they really apply to you.
