Hi Everyone, I am having a problem with my windows explorer.. I am unable to
get to any menus or control panel to trouble shoot. Thought I would just
upgrade to xp pro so that it would just replace windows explorer.. Does
anyone know if I will loose all my data.. pictures and files etc..??

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.

Normally, the upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular,
almost always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same
kernel.

However, in your case, there's no guarantee; upgrading over a defective
installation is almost always a bad idea. I'd strongly suggest that you
fix any and all problems with your current OS *before* you seriously
contemplate an upgrade.

To give an upgrade the best chance for success the underlying system should
be running well with no problems and no malware. Upgrading a system with
problems is a crap shoot whether things will be the same after the upgrade,
better, or it could be worse. Fix the underlying problems first. The other
option if you indeed want to go to Pro is to backup data, then do a clean
install. Note there are not a lot of compelling reasons to go to Pro. Do
you have a specific need for it?
